There are a few advantages to being old. You only have to reach into your tool box for a Millers Falls hand drill and most everything you need for most projects you already have!

I didn't have the 1/4-20 brass threaded rod, but I had a 1/4-20 x 3" screw and a cutoff saw to lop off the head.

If you leave the ends of your coils long enough they can be used to wire point to point with fewer jumpers.

So far, so good. I tried to make the 4.7mH first, but using the parameters in the inductor calculator here Inductor Designer / Calculator I came up way short at 2.7mH. I just removed a bunch of wire until I got to 1.6 for another inductor in the circuit.



I have 4 done and now need to try the 4.7s again. Probably left the leads a little short. The 1.6s are .4 Ohms, the 1.1s are .31. I'm thinking the 4.7s will come in around .5.

OK then...all inductors are done. The 4.7s weight over 2#! This one actually measures 4.7, but the scale seems to have an affect. They are .68 Ohms, exactly what the Shavano website said they should be.



Ironically, while making these electrical components, a huge rainstorm blew through. I noticed a clog in a roof gutter and as I reached my hand up to clean out a wad of twigs and leaves, a bolt of lightning hit. My hand was on the aluminum gutter and the charge almost knocked my on my butt! I was tingly for an hour. I wonder if that ever happened to Tesla.

That IS interesting. I noticed inductance went up just by poking a small screwdriver through the center.

I planned on using 3/16" MDF board for the chassis and mount the coils like this:

yes a ferrous core will increase inductance. a coil with electrons flowing thru it has a magnetic field. when the field affected by the presence of ferrous and some nonferrous material. the inductance is also affected. seems to me that an iron cored inducter would be choice.

But more distortion too. I've heard it said aircore for hifi, iron core for midfi.

The only downside of aircore is cost. But I made all 6 for under $70 in copper...plus an entire Saturday morning!
